The Georgia Academy for the Blind is pleased to announce the opening of the Smokey Powell Assistive Technology Center. The Center is housed on The Academy campus and will provide services to students who are blind or visually impaired, both at the Georgia Academy for the Blind and in the local school system (LSS). Services will be provided at no cost to the student. The LSS will be responsible for providing technology after it is deemed appropriate for a student.
Center Objectives
* To provide assistive technology assessments for Georgia students who are visually impaired/blind.
* To provide a Low Vision Clinic for students who are visually impaired.
* To provide training for use of prescribed technology at the Center with follow-up in the customary environment.
* To loan prescribed technology, when available, to students until it is established that the prescribed technology will be beneficial to the student.
* To provide professional training opportunities for teachers of students who are visually impaired/blind. PLUs will be offered.
Low Vision Evaluations
* Students must be accompanied by their vision teacher or by an LEA representative. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Please complete the following steps:
1. Complete all information on the referral checklist: Referral Checklist for Low Vision Evaluation
*The submitted eye report must be current within the year and include refraction information.
2. Complete release of information form for the optometrist: Release of Information
Assistive Technology Evaluations
* Students must be accompanied by their vision teacher or by an LEA representative. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.

2. Complete the AT Checklist: Consideration Checklist for AT Evaluation
When the completed documents are received for either Assistive Technology or Low Vision, you will be contacted for scheduling.
